The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) offers workshops on italic calligraphy with Mark Watanabe.
Introduction to Italic Calligraphy is designed for those who are new to western italic calligraphy. Students practice pen skills and techniques as they learn how to hand-letter the italic letter forms and develop familiarity with the broad-nibbed pen and marker. Classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, February 6 - 15, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. in UCB 103. Tuition is $75.
Creative Applications with Italic Calligraphy builds upon the Introduction to Italic Calligraphy workshop. Students further develop their pen skills and techniques by focusing on creative and practical explorations in applying hand lettering to various kinds of products. Classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays, February 26 - March 7, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. in UCB 103. Tuition is $75. A discount package for both classes is available for $135.
Watanabe is a professional photographer and digital media arts instructor. He formerly worked as a lettering artist at Hallmark Cards.
