The College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo offers two workshop series on beekeeping and aquaponics in October.

Aquaponic for Beginners will be held on October 3 & 4, 10 am - noon, in UH Hilo’s College of Agriculture Building Room 102. The cost is $45.

Participants will join farmer-instructor Jeremai Cann for a classroom and hands-on session where he will teach beginner aquaponic gardeners how to get started with aquaponics for a no-till, no-weeds, no-irrigation food production system. The sessions will include in-depth coverage on plants, aquaculture, water quality, system cycling and construction.

The Benefits of Beekeeping will be held on October 6, 13, and 20 from 5 - 8 pm, and on October 24 from 9 am to 1 pm, in UH Hilo’s Science & Technology Building Room 118 and the Komohana Research and Extension Center. Classes may be taken as a series for $50, or individually at $20 each.

The series combines lecture, lab and fieldwork designed to support beekeepers at all levels of experience or those who aspire to keep bees. Instructor and Hawaiʻi apiary specialist Danielle Downey will cover Honey Bee Biology, Honey Bee Health, Products of the Hive, and Field Day in the Apiary.
