The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo offers non-credit American Sign Language (ASL) classes open to anyone age 15 and up.
American Sign Language: Practical Conversation is designed to facilitate conversational skills for students of mixed levels. Students should have completed CCE’s ASL 1A class or have some prior experience with ASL. Classes are held Mondays, September 9 - November 18, with no class on November 11, from 5-6:30 p.m in UH Hilo's Wentworth 9. The cost is $95, and no book is required. Instructor Lisa Hanson worked as an interpreter in Oregon and has been signing for almost 30 years.
American Sign Language, Level 1A introduces the basics of ASL, including grammar and vocabulary for simple social conversation. Classes are Tuesdays, September 17- November 19, 5 - 6:30 p.m., in UH Hilo's Wentworth 14. The cost is $150 and the Signing Naturally Student Workbook, Units 1-6 is required. Instructor Pam Bond is a deaf instructor and native in ASL. She has 12 years of teaching experience at Brigham Young University and at the high school level.
American Sign Language, Level 1C/1D, also taught by Pam Bond, is for anyone comfortable with the material in Units 1-5 of the Signing Naturally curriculum. Participants will focus on advancing expressive and receptive conversational skills. Classes are Thursdays, September 19 - November 21, 5 - 6:30 p.m,. in UH Hilo's Wentworth 14. The cost is $150 and the Signing Naturally Student Workbook, Units 1-6 is required.
