CCECS announces Secrets of the Soil classes

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo offers a two-part series of classes entitled Secrets of the Soil with ecologist, horticulturist and land planner Zach Mermel. Both sessions will be held at UH Hilo’s College of Agriculture Building, Room 102. The cost is $35 per class, or $60 for both .

Part 1 – Soil Biology Basics is offered on Saturday, February 18, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. This interactive session will explore the dynamics of the soil food web, various properties of the soil, and the fundamentals of soil testing at the homestead and farm scale.

Part 2 - How to Make High Quality Compost will be held on Saturday, February 25, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. This hands-on session will involve constructing a biologically active compost pile, and will include strategies to dramatically enhance the life-giving properties of the soil.
