The College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo offers a class for students seeking a crash course on the scientific principles and practices relating to sustainable and organic food production and the role of sustainable agriculture in our communities. Tuition is $95.
Sustainable Agriculture in the Tropics will be held on Saturdays, October 22 and 29, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. in UH Hilo’s UCB Room 331, and on Saturdays, November 12 and 19, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the North Hawaiʻi Education and Research Center (NHERC) in Honoka`a.
The class will be taught by Dr. Melanie Willich, who teaches agriculture, bioenergy, and horticulture courses at UH Hilo. Topics include modern agriculture and food systems, soil fertility management, integrated pest management, weed control, and sustainable livestock husbandry.
Private and non-government employers/businesses may qualify for a 50% tuition waiver through the state’s Employment & Training Fund (ETF). For details, visit
