NHERC announces Filipino American History Month events

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo North Hawaiʻi Education and Research Center (NHERC) is sponsoring a series of free community events in October in honor of Filipino American History Month. All of the following events will be held on Tuesdays in the NHERC conference room located at 45-539 Plumeria Street in

Honoka`a.

• October 4, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.: A panel discussion on the book Filipinas: Voices

from Daughters and Descendants of Hawaiʻi’s Plantation Era edited by Dr. Patricia

Brown

• October 11, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.: A discussion on the role of Filipinos in the labor

movement in Hawaiʻi, focusing on the contributions of the Sakadas of 1946

• October 18, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.: A screening and discussion of the film “The Delano

Manongs – Forgotten Heroes of the United Farm Workers (UFW) Movement” on the

1965 Delano Grape Strike when Filipino and Mexican workers banded together to form

the UFW

• October 25, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.: A showing of original, historical/vintage film

footage and discussion about World War II in the Philippines and the role of Filipino

American guerrillas against the invading forces of Japan from 1941 – 1945
