The College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo offers a pair of hands-on digital photography workshops in July. Classes will be held 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. in UH Hilo’s UCB 125 (Mac Lab). Tuition is $125 for each workshop or $195 for both.
Part 1 (July 5-8) is an introduction to the essential concepts and photographic techniques needed to properly operate a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera. After first learning the benefits and limitations of DSLRs and how to select proper lenses and accessories, students will learn how to utilize the camera functions such as aperture, depth of field, shutter speed, sensor, light, and different file formats.
Part 2 (July 12- 15) expands on the fundamentals of digital photography as participants gain greater knowledge about equipment, procedures and picture-taking techniques to enable them to take their photography skills to the next level. Students are advised to wear comfortable clothing and shoes as this session requires walking around campus.
Both courses will be taught by professional photographer and digital media arts instructor Mark Watanabe, who presently teaches photography and graphic arts at Kea’au High School. A digital single lens reflex (DSLR) or mirrorless camera is required.
