CCECS announces summer classes for seniors

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is offering summer fitness classes designed for seniors and those looking for gentle or beginning exercise programs.

Lift to Thrive with Certified Fitness Trainer (CFT) PK Soares-Mercado builds strength to improve balance, tone and functional fitness. Sessions include low intensity warm ups (no jumping or running), lifting, floor exercises, cooling down and stretching, emphasizing proper breathing. Classes are held on Saturdays from 9– 10 a.m., June 4-August 6, at the UH Hilo Old Gym. Tuition is $60.

Soares-Mercado will also teach Full Body Conditioning, a class featuring weight lifting, resistance training, yoga movements and light to medium aerobic exercises to achieve a full-body workout. Sessions are held on Wednesdays from 5– 6 p.m., June 8-August 10, at the UH Hilo Old Gym. The cost is $60. Both Full Body Conditioning and Lift to Thrive require a yoga mat, bath towel, water, dumbbells, exercise ball, and any preferred braces or supports.

Therapeutic Yoga with Catherine Southern will help participants find their body’s most comfortable, natural state through gentle, intelligent sequencing of movements. A yoga mat and water are required and participants should wear comfortable clothing that permits a full range of movement. Classes are scheduled on Tuesdays from 5– 6:15 p.m., June 7 – August 9, at the UH Hilo Old Gym. Tuition is $80.

Barbara Klein, chief instructor and co-founder of Aikido of Hilo, teaches Qigong for Beginners. The exercises and breathing are believed to be beneficial in improving overall health and longevity, organs and the immune system. Classes will be held on Saturdays from 8-9 a.m., June 11-July 30, at the Aikido of Hilo facility located at 29 Shipman Street #203.The cost is $70.
