The public is invited to attend the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo 2016 Ka Lama Ku Student Leadership Conference on Saturday, February 27, from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. in Campus Center Room 301. “Navigating Toward Success - - Ho`okele I Ka Moku Lanakila” will include several workshop sessions focusing on leadership development such as service learning, team building, and cultural awareness. The registration deadline is Tuesday, February 23. Seating is limited.
The conference will feature two UH Hilo graduates who are now educators and navigators with the Pacific Voyaging Society’s Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage with Hokule`a. Kaleo Pilago, academic support office manager with the Hale Kea Advancement and Testing Center at Hawai’i Community College, will be part of the morning welcome, and Celeste “Cesi” Ha`o, programs assistant at the `Imiloa Astronomy Center, will discuss her journey during lunch. Pilago and Ha`o will also facilitate an afternoon workshop session.
A panel discussion with graduate students of the program entitled “Life After College – A Talk Story Session,” will include associate attorney Jacky Mena, educator Maile Boggeln, researcher Kaipo Dye, Mikiala Akiona of the Pacific Voyaging Society, youth specialist Waerin Edwin and others discussing their goals, challenges and successes since graduating. Andrew Polloi of the Pacific Island Student Center Student Health & Wellness Program will lead a student discussion on respect.
Registered UH Hilo students with a valid UH Hilo student ID may attend and participate free of charge. A registration fee of $49 will apply to all other participants, and includes a Local First lunch made from agricultural products from Hawai’i Island.
The conference is sponsored by the UH Hilo Campus Center, the Campus Center Fee Board, the Board of Media Broadcasting, the Campus & Community Services Program, the Ka Lama Ku Student Leadership Program & Advisory Council, the Pacific Island Student Center (PISC), the PISC Student Health & Wellness Team, and the UH Hilo Student Health & Wellness Program.
