Summer program putting UH Hilo on math ...

There is a buzz of excitement in the air at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo College Hall where an elite handful of students this week began to engage in challenging mathematical and computational activities.

The Pacific Undergraduate Research Experience in Mathematics (PURE Math) is a research experience for undergraduates (REU) program funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) Mentoring Through Critical Transition Points (MCTP) grant and a National Security Agency (NSA) award. Each year, 24 undergraduates and two graduate students from across the country come to UH Hilo to conduct up to eight weeks of mathematics research. The session is comprised of two sections consisting of a five-week interns program and an eight-week residents program.

PURE Math, now in its fourth year, is Hawai’i’s only mathematics research experience serving undergraduates and the only one in the country focusing on Pacific Island students. The program is also one of the country’s most productive and competitive REU’s with an acceptance rate of just 5-7%.

PURE Math has received high marks from its external evaluator, which reported that the program has achieved rare results for REU’s by excelling in producing rigorous, high quality mathematics while serving under-represented populations. Principal investigator Dr. Roberto Pelayo says the program’s success speaks for itself where it counts.

“The benchmarks we measure the program’s success by include the numerous peer-reviewed publications we’ve produced that have appeared in research-level journals and the number of students who use this summer research program to gain entry into some very competitive Ph.D. programs in mathematics,” Pelayo said. “You can find PURE Math alumni in mathematics Ph.D. programs at several top-tier universities, including such storied institutions as Harvard and the University of California, Berkeley.”

Pelayo believes these success stories are earning UH Hilo a reputation as a “hot spot” for undergraduate mathematics research training. He says the students will showcase their research during a pair of symposia that will take place near the end of the program for interns on July 18 and residents on August 7.

Faculty-student paper published in top scientific journal

$

A short paper on nonlinear science, co-authored by a University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo physics professor and a recently graduated student has been published in the June 19 issue of Nature. With an estimated readership of nearly half a million, Nature is considered one of the world's top two scientific journals.

“How chaos forgets and remembers” was co-authored by Dr. Philippe M. Binder, and by Robert M. Pipes, who graduated last month with bachelor’s degrees in physics and astronomy from UH Hilo. The paper was written as part of a course project in the Phys/Math 380 course taught by Binder last semester.

Their work examined a recent study that has added a layer of subtlety to a central tenet of chaos theory, which holds that deterministic models which produce the same output from a given starting condition or initial state, can display behavior that seems random.

It is widely believed that chaotic systems produce information as they evolve in time. Yet, a recent paper by James Crutchfield’s research group at the University of California at Davis found that some of the information measured in the present came from the past while the rest was newly created. Some of the created information carries into the future (is remembered) while the rest does not (is forgotten).

In addition to providing a historical context and illustrated example of these features, Binder and Pipes examine how the new findings can be used to gain a better understanding of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This physical law, not well understood at the fundamental level, defines the behavior in time of isolated systems ranging from gases mixed in a container to the entire Universe.

Binder described the joint article as a “milestone” and a good example of the fruitful collaborations that frequently develop among faculty and students within his department and division.

“Robert was an outstanding student here, and I am very happy that he will be recognized for this work,” Binder said.

Dean of pharmacy to leave UH Hilo

In an announcement made today, John M. Pezzuto, founding dean of the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy, will leave the University at the end of this year to assume his new duties as Professor and Dean of the Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Long Island University (LIU) located in Brooklyn, NY. Pezzuto became the first dean of the only college of pharmacy in the Pacific region when he left Purdue University in 2006.

“I came to UH Hilo from a top-ranked pharmacy college because it presented the challenge of starting a college of pharmacy where there was none before,” Pezzuto said. “My wife Mimi and I and our three children have cherished our time in the Aloha State. The decision of taking these next steps has been extraordinarily difficult. But LIU is one of the oldest pharmacy programs in the country, and I feel that I am uniquely suited to help them reach the next levels of preeminence.”

When Pezzuto arrived in Hawaiʻi, the College of Pharmacy had no offices, no staff, no students, and no assurance of a future. He methodically assembled a staff of world-renowned faculty who would build the school into what is now a contender for one of the top-25 ranked colleges in the U.S.

“It has been a great pleasure working with someone of Dean Pezzuto’s caliber,” said Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Matt Platz. “This is sad news for the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, but because he has worked diligently on preparing the College for this day, I am confident we are ready for the next steps. I have no doubt his name will live on in the future of our College, and we are grateful for the work he has done to get us to this point.”

Pezzuto is well known for his research that identified the cancer-preventive component of grapes and grape products known as resveratrol. After the research report was published in Science Magazine in 1997, many more stories in scientific journals as well as mainstream media focused on the discovery that gave real promise to the fight against cancer. According to the Web of Science Core Collection, his work on resveratrol has been cited more than 3,000 times.

Most recently, he was given the top research award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), as well as an award from the Cantine Due Palme in Italy for outstanding contributions in the field of research and culture.

Prior to joining UH Hilo, he served as Professor and Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences at Purdue University. Pezzuto has been supported by the National Institutes of Health continuously since 1977. He is the author of more than 500 manuscripts, editor of the journal Pharmaceutical Biology, holder of many patents, a member of several editorial boards, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The University plans to launch a nationwide search to identify the next dean of the College.

Permanent building helps College of Pharmacy receive ...

In a report to the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, the national accreditation body has extended the accreditation of the only pharmacy school in the Pacific region, reversing an earlier noncompliance finding.

The American Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) has now found DKICP compliant with all of the 30 standards that it uses to evaluate colleges of pharmacy.

The main issue considered by the ACPE was compliance with the standard concerning physical facilities. In May this year, State House and Senate budget conferees agreed to fund a building to house the College on Hawaiʻi Island.

Chancellor Donald Straney: “I was secure in the knowledge that our community knew the value of the College of Pharmacy to the future, to the economy and to the general well-being of our State. I want to thank everyone involved for their continued support that led to the funding of a permanent building.”

In 2013, ACPE declared DKICP was out of compliance with the standard concerning physical facilities after which, without promise of a permanent building, could ultimately lead to probation. Founding Dean John Pezzuto said probation could have signaled the end of the College.

“If we had followed the path we were on just a year ago, I could be saying that we have been placed on probation, which would've been disastrous for the future of the College,” Pezzuto said. “It is heartening that our accreditation is once again secure, but we all must remain diligent and prepare for the next steps.”

The College now must complete a self-study due by September, to be followed by an on-site visit in October 2014. The results of the site visit and continuation of accreditation will be reviewed at the next ACPE Board meeting, to be held in January 2015.
