UH Hilo offers Japanese woodblock printing classes

The Center for Community Engagement at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo offers a woodblock printing workshop with local artist Glenn Yamanoha on Saturdays, October 5-19, from 9 a.m – 12:30 p.m. in UH Hilo’s PB-5. Cost is $145.

In Art for Everyone: Japanese Woodblock Printing, participants will learn traditional Japanese woodblock printing methods and techniques, including preparation of washi paper, image transfer, and cutting blocks, as well as some history and vocabulary. Materials are provided and students will be able to take home their finished designs and prints as well as a set of wood cutting tools.

Yamanoha is an established painter and printmaker residing in Volcano. He has a BFA in painting from the University of Washington in Seattle, studied graphic design at Seattle Art Institute, and has many years of experience teaching design, drawing and painting on the college level.
