The Center for Community Engagement at theUniversity of Hawaiʻi at Hilo offers a unique art workshop with Glenn Yamanoha and Darrell Miyashiro for participants ages 18 and older.

Art for Everyone: Drawing with Fire introduces participants to use a plasma cutter to create unique metal art pieces. A plasma machine harnesses arc welding technology coupled with compressed air, allowing one to cut through sheet metal. This class will include safety and education regarding the use of equipment, basic design concepts, and hands-on training/tips for creating a finished piece of metal artwork. Classes will be held on the UH Hilo main campus at the Hawaiʻi Community College Welding Facility on Saturdays, July 13-27, from 9 a.m. – noon. Cost is $175.

Students must provide the following required items: steel-toe shoes, one can of spray paint (color of choice), garden/working gloves, long pants, long sleeve shirt (thick material such as denim preferred). Students must be comfortable with learning to use industrial tools.

Yamanoha is an established painter and printmaker residing in Volcano, HI. He has a BFA in painting from the University of Washington in Seattle, studied graphic design at Seattle Art Institute, and has many years of experience teaching design, drawing and painting on the college level.

Miyashiro is an instructor with the Machine, Welding, and Industrial Mechanics Technologies program at HawCC.
