The Center for Community Engagement at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo offers unique summer classes on conceptualizing and designing characters. Classes are for participants 15 years and older, and are held in UH Hilo’s PB-5.
In Character Development, Part 1: The Concept, students will learn the process of developing complex and engaging characters for a writing project, whether it be a novel, screenplay, comic book, or just for fun. Students should bring a notebook and pen, and/or laptop. Classes are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, June 17-21, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Cost is $60.
Instructor Adam Sydney has worked with professional writers for more than 20 years, helping to develop compelling, three-dimensional characters that drive their stories. He has graduate degrees in screenwriting from the University of London and The American Film Institute.
In Character Development, Part 2: The Design, students will go beyond the basics of figure drawing to build fuller dimensions of their characters, learning how to visually express their actions, emotions, thoughts, and desires. Classes are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, June 24-28, from 5:30 -7:30 p.m. Cost is $65.
Instructor Jessica Brand is a graduate of Hawaiʻi Community College and UH Hilo with a degree in Art. A life-long artist and social advocate, she has worked with children and adults for many years through the YMCA, Kamehameha Schools, Girl Scouts of America, and Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi.
