UH Hilo offers summer art journal classes ...

The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo offers classes for teens and tweens to create and fill their own art journals.

Tween/Teen Art: Handmade Books teaches students to make handmade books for journaling, sketching, writing, or whatever inspires them. The course includes techniques for creating their own personalized cover as well as assembling and binding. Classes will be held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, June 3-7, from 3 pm – 5 pm, in UH Hilo’s PB-5. Cost is $65.

Instructor Leandra Keuma completed her BA in Communication with a minor in Sociology and received her Highly Qualified Teacher Certification from the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. She is currently the owner and curator of Circle of Life Art Studio.

Students in Tween/Teen Art: Art Journaling will fill their art journals by recording thoughts, feelings, and experiences through a combination of words and art. They will learn a variety of techniques to create images of their lives, experimenting with sketching, color, and design. Classes will be held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, June 10-21, from 3 pm – 5pm in UH Hilo’s PB-5. Cost is $115.

Instructor Jessica Brand is a graduate of Hawaiʻi Community College and University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art. A life-long artist and social advocate, she has worked with children and adults for many years through the YMCA, Kamehameha Schools, Girl Scouts of America, and Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi.
