The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo offers non-credit American Sign Language (ASL) classes to anyone age 15 and older.
American Sign Language, Level 1 introduces the basics of ASL, including grammar and vocabulary for simple social conversation. Instructor Vicki Linter has been an ASL interpreter for 25 years and has taught ASL in California and Hawaiʻi. Classes are held in UH Hilo's Wentworth 14 from 5 - 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, February 19 – May 7, with no classes on March 19 and 26. The cost is $150 and the Signing Naturally Student Workbook, Units 1-6 is required.
American Sign Language: Practical Conversation is designed to facilitate conversational skills for students of mixed levels. Students should have completed CCE’s ASL 1 class, or have some prior experience with ASL. Instructor Lisa Hanson has been an ASL interpreter since 1998 and is currently working for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at Kea‘au High School. Classes are held in UH Hilo's Wentworth 9 from 5-6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, February 5 – March 12. The cost is $65, and no book is required.
