The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) offers two classes geared to those employed in the tourism industry.
The Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) workshop is scheduled October 28-31, 8:30-4:30 p.m. and designed for those who deliver interpretive programs to the public, including museum docents, cultural program specialists, educators, park rangers, and tour guides. The course combines both the theoretical foundations of the profession with practical skills in delivering quality interpretive programming to visitors. Tuition is $325 and includes textbooks. An additional certification application fee of $130 is optional.
The Certified Interpretive Host (CIH) workshop is offered November 4 -5 from 8:30-4:30 p.m. and combines customer service with informal interpretation to help participants improve their responses to guests while helping to achieve stewardship goals of the organization. This course is designed for staff members who work at interpretive sites, but do not necessarily deliver interpretive programs. Tuition is $200 and includes textbooks. An additional certification application fee of $130 is optional.
The workshops are given by Lisa Brochu and Tim Merriman, co-authors of National Association for Interpretation’s certification and training materials. They served as executive staff of NAI for almost two decades during which they advanced the standards for professionalism in all aspects of heritage interpretation.
