The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo presents a lecture on ethical issues surrounding health care by Dr. Celia Bardwell-Jones, associate professor and chair of philosophy and director of the UH Hilo Gender and Women’s Studies Program, on Tuesday, September 26 at 5 p.m. in UH Hilo’s UCB Room 100. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.
“Placental Ethics: Addressing Colonial Legacies and Imagining Culturally Safe Responses to Health Care in Hawai’i” aims to raise awareness about the ethical issues surrounding women’s rights to their placentas and to question the implications of current healthcare practices on Hawaiian culture. Bardwell-Jones will examine the 2006 placenta controversy in which hospitals held policies that prohibited women from leaving with their placentas after a hospital birth and present a strategy to bridge the perceived divide between culture and medicine.
The event is sponsored by the UH Hilo Women’s Center, Gender and Women’s Studies Club, and Hawaiʻi Island Philosophy Club.
