Indian studies classes offered

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo announces unique Indian studies classes with UH Hilo Philosophy instructor Benjamin Zenk.

Introduction to Sanskrit 1: The Language of the Gods will teach students the basic fundamentals of Sanskrit, including the Devanāgarī alphabet, vowel assimilation and simple grammatical forms. Classes will be held on Mondays from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m., February 6 to April 24, with no classes on February 20 and March 27. The cost is $125.

Introduction to Sanskrit 2 will move beyond Devanāgarī script to vowel assimilation and basic Sanskrit sentence structure. Participants must have taken Introduction to Sanskrit 1, or have knowledge of Devanāgarī script. The required text is Devavāṇipraveśikā: An Introduction to the Sanskrit Language by Goldman and Goldman. Classes will be held on Fridays from 10:30 a.m.- 12 p.m., February 10 to April 28, with no classes on March 31 and April 14. The cost is $125.

Indian Buddhist Thought will explore the diverse range of Buddhist thought as it has developed in Asia. The focus will be on developing a pan-Buddhist philosophical vocabulary by learning about major Buddhist ideas from Southeast Asia, India, Tibet, and China. Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-12 p.m., February 8 to March 15. The cost is $45.

All classes will be held on the UH Hilo Campus in the PB-7 Meeting Room.
