Two junior students majoring in linguistics at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo have been awarded the Gertrude E. McVickar Endowed Excellence Scholarship for 2016-2017.
Anayah Doi, a homeschooled student from Hilo, is attending Hokkaido University in Japan. She hopes to teach English or do research on second-language acquisition in Japan.
Marleena Sheffield, who was originally homeschooled in Florida, is currently attending Pontifica Universidad Catolica del Peru in South America. Sheffield is finishing her degree in linguistics.
The McVickar Endowed Excellence Scholarship was created in memory of Gertrude E. McVickar, who believed that all students should be encouraged to participate in international exchange programs. Students interested in applying must be a full-time student at UH Hilo, have a minimum 3.5 GPA, as well as have at least 24 completed credits from UH Hilo.
