The College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo offers a class on Hydroponic Food Production, to be held on Saturday, September 17 and 24 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., and a class on Sustainable Agriculture in the Tropics, to be held on Saturday, October 22 and 29, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Both classes will be held in UCB Room 331. The cost is $95 for a single class or $175 for both. The State’s Employment and Training Fund (ETF) opportunity is also available for those who qualify.
Hydroponic Food Production is a course for growers, farm workers, horticulturists or anyone seeking a sound foundation in hydroponic growing, focusing on principles and practices of hydroponic systems.
Sustainable Agriculture in the Tropics is geared for students who want a crash course on the scientific principles and practices relating to sustainable and organic food production and the role of sustainable agriculture within our communities. Topics include modern agriculture and food systems, soil fertility management, integrated pest management, weed control, sustainable livestock husbandry, and more.
Both courses are taught by Dr. Melanie Willich, who teaches agriculture, bioenergy, and horticulture at UH Hilo.
