The College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is offering American Sign Language (ASL) Level 1 classes taught by Sonia Barlongo, a deaf instructor who holds a Master of Science degree in Deaf Education and currently teaches at the Community College of Baltimore County in Maryland. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 28 through July 28, from 5:30 – 7 p.m. in UH Hilo’s Science and Technology Building (STB) Room 226. Tuition is $150.
ASL is used to educate hearing people about the deaf culture, community, and their method of communication. Participants will learn the basics of ASL, including grammar and vocabulary for simple social conversation, along with rules of social interaction. The first two sessions will include an interpreter to facilitate initial learning, with subsequent classes conducted entirely through ASL. Signing Naturally Workbook, Level 1, Units 1-6, is the required textbook.
