The College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo announces summer music classes with instructor Artin Mardirousi. All classes will be held at UH Hilo’s Kanaka‘ole Hall, Room 122.
The Structure of a Song will teach participants about the different parts that comprise a song, as well as songwriting patterns, techniques, and theory. Students will be able to create a properly structured song with clear intention. All levels of musicians and singers are welcome and are encouraged to bring their instruments. The class runs on June 6, 8 and 10 from 5-7 p.m. Cost is $50.
Mardirousi also offers three levels of beginning guitar instruction. An acoustic guitar is required for all classes. Each level costs $80, with a discount package offered for all three levels at $210.
Guitar Fundamentals, Level 1: Getting Started is designed for absolute beginners. Participants will learn the parts of the instrument and holding techniques. Students will also learn basic songs and practice techniques to improve their hand movement. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 14-30, from 5-7 p.m.
Guitar Fundamentals, Level 2: Chords will cover various chords and their structures. New students may join this class if they have the basic knowledge covered in Level 1. Different aspects of each chord scale will be covered, as well as the best use of each. Students will be able to take their guitar playing to the next level by understanding chords and their purpose and use in playing music and writing songs. Classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 5-21, from 5-7 p.m.
In Guitar Fundamentals, Level 3: Scales and Beyond, students will learn the different scales and their structures. New students may join this class if they have the basic knowledge covered in Levels 1 and 2. The different aspects of each scale will be discussed, as well as how they play a distinct role in creating the sound and feel of a song. Students will learn skills for creating melodies. Classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 26-August 11, from 5-7 p.m.
Mardirousi began his music career at an early age, beginning with classical training as a violinist. From live performances with a myriad of artists to professional recordings of original compositions, Mardirousi has fine-tuned his passion for music and has set his sights on sharing the joy of musical creation.
