The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo North Hawai'i Education and Research Center (NHERC) offers a permaculture workshop in February at the Center, located at 45-539 Plumeria Street in Honoka‘a, and a grant writing workshop in March at the Waikoloa Elementary School, located at 68-1730 Hooko St. in Waikoloa Village.
Instructor Zach Mermel covers the basics of permaculture— a design discipline that mimics nature's patterns to create healthy and resilient human habitats. Experiential learning exercises (including plant propagation, garden bed creation, and nature-based awareness) will be complemented by slide presentations and collaborative discussions. The course culminates with a mini design project. Workshop will be held from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday & Sunday, February 20 & 21. Tuition is $95.
Participants in Basic Grant Writing will learn about the grant writing process, how to write a compelling statement of need, and learn what funders are looking for in grant proposals. Instructor Jeani Navarro has over 30 years of grant writing experience and has helped various community organizations secure needed funding. Samples and handouts are provided. A certificate will be given upon completion of the course. Workshop will be held from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, and is eligible for Employment & Training Funding. Participants must register by March 4.
