The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo North Hawai'i Education and Research Center (NHERC) announces its community education classes and workshops for Spring 2016. All sessions will be held at the Center, located at 45-539 Plumeria Street in Honoka`a with the exception of Basic Grant Writing, which will be held at Waikoloa Elementary School.
Living Well As Long As Possible with Dr. Hugh Montgomery is a walk and talk around the Hamakua coast, designed to boost one’s physical health, manage stress, maintain optimal functioning and make healthy lifestyle choices. Classes are held each Saturday, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m., January 16 – February 6. Tuition is $60.
Japanese for Everyone teaches participants basic sentence structure, pronunciation, and daily conversational expressions along with the history, culture and customs of Japan. This beginner’s course, taught by Issei Seiichi Kaida, meets Wednesdays, 6 – 8 p.m., January 20 – March 23. Tuition is $100.
Author Anthony Roberts shares his creative writing insights in Fundamentals of Writing a Fiction Novel. Participants will learn everything from the basic tools of writing fiction to tips on how to publish their own novel. Sessions will be held on Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. – noon, January 23 – March 26. Tuition is $120.
Graphic Designer Kellie Miyazu covers everything from the basics to composing dynamic and active compositions and creating a personal portfolio in Exploratory Drawing & Painting for Beginners. Classes are held on Saturdays, 9 a.m. – noon, February 6 – March 26. Art supplies are included in the $140 tuition.
Introduction to Permaculture Design with Zach Mermel covers design discipline that mimics nature’s patterns to create healthy, resilient human habitats culminating in a mini design project. The workshops are held Saturday and Sunday, February 20 & 21, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tuition is $95.
Participants in Basic Grant Writing with Jeani Navarro will learn all about the grant writing process, from how to write a compelling statement of need to what funders are looking for in grant proposals. A certificate will be provided upon completion of the class, which is held on Saturday, March 19, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Waikoloa Elementary School. Tuition is $75.
