The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo hosts a free public screening of the documentary The Mask You Live In on Wednesday, November 4, at the University Classroom Building Room 100. Viewing begins at 5:15 p.m. following a 4:30 p.m. reception. The screening concludes with a community discussion.
The documentary is written, produced and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. It examines the struggles of boys and young men to remain true to themselves as they negotiate America’s definition of masculinity. In addition to personal narratives, the film features experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media who discuss how gender stereotypes are interconnected with race, class, and circumstance.
The event is sponsored by Joyful Heart Foundation, UH Hilo's Student Health & Wellness Programs, Men of Strength, Women’s Center, and the Diversity Committee.
