CCECS announces Food Certificate program

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) is accepting enrollment in the Master Food Preserver Certificate Program. Classes will be held August 26, 27, 28 and September 2, 3, 4, 10 and 11 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Maluhia Building at 891Ululani Street and “The Kitchen” at 615 Haihai Street in Hilo. The cost is $400.

Individuals interested in developing their own jams and jellies, canning acid foods, pressure canning low acid foods, pickling and fermenting, drying, freezing, and the art of charcuterie are encouraged to become certified Hawaiʻi Master Food Preservers. Individuals able to commit to an eight-day, 64-hour training AND volunteer at least 20 hours in a year may be qualified to attend.

Kaua`i-born instructor Kalen Kelekoma is a certified Master Food Preserver who has taught children and adults on Kaua`i and O`ahu and manages the weekly Waipa Tuesday Farmer’s Market, Poi Day Thursday and coordinates the Waipa Music & Mango and Kalo Festivals.

Private and non-government employers/businesses may qualify for a 50% tuition waiver through the State’s Employment & Training Fund (ETF). Visit http://labor.hawaii.gov/wdd/home/employers/etf/micro/ for details.
